This is a private game sanctuary separated from the vast Tsavo west only by a road. Animals roam freely between the two areas and in the hills that dot this sanctuary. The Hills are home to a wide variety of game including Lion, cheetah, and elephant and plains game. Bird life includes the extremely rare Taita Falcon, a bird recorded in early Egyptian hieroglyphics. This region is more remote than the most of the other visited parks and reserves in Kenya, the perfect destination for anyone looking for an opportunity to get away from it all and relax in the wild. The Sanctuary, established in 1972 covers a protected area of 28,000 acres (approximately 110 sq. kms or 44 sq. miles) rising to an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level (3,600 ft.). It consists mainly of plains and woodlands, with typical riverbank vegetation along the water course.

The waterholes are illuminated by powerful floodlights as it gets dark, to make sure that you witness all the activity throughout the night. The Sanctuary is a success story in sustainable conservation where wildlife - including elephant, lion, buffalo and giraffe - thrive. Game drives are tightly controlled to ensure that animals are not harassed and some areas are completely closed to vehicles. This commitment to responsible ecotourism, which has been so well supported by visitors, ensures that the Sanctuary and all its wildlife will continue to prosper. The Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge offers luxury accommodation and facilities and is the perfect place in an unforgettable setting to explore the natural environment around.

ACTIVITIES:

Game Viewing

Early morning and late afternoon game drives provide an ideal opportunity to view and photograph the diverse array of wildlife within the Sanctuary. The waterholes below provide a wonderful opportunity to view animals at close proximity in their natural habitat. The lobby and terraced bar offer excellent views and photographic opportunities, while an underground tunnel and bunker with ground level windows provides unbelievably close yet safe access to a variety of animals as they drink.

Night Game Drives

Night game drives provide guests with an opportunity of seeing animals not usually encountered on a daytime game drive such as spotted and striped hyena, mongoose, jackal, civet, genet, porcupine and bushbaby. Most predators are more active at night, so night drives also provide the opportunity of experiencing the ‘circle of life’. Our highly trained rangers equipped with powerful spotlights take guests for this experience of a totally different world after dark, when you may have the thrilling opportunity to see a predator actively hunting.
