Karura Forest

Karura Forest is a wonderful place to go for a walk for all those nature lovers.  It is an oasis of tranquillity in the centre of one of Africa’s fastest-growing and most frenetic city. Karura Forest has 2500 acres of waterfalls, skyscraper trees, tangled vines and wild animals, through which gentle pathways twist and turn. Nairobi’s residents retire to Karura Forest to walk, bike, jog and enjoy lunch at the serenely beautiful River Café.

Ngong Hills

The Ngong Hills are 7 peaks in a ridge along the great rift valley located in Kajiado County in Kenya. The sharp spine of the Ngong Hills stretches for 11.5 kilometers and takes about 5-6 hours (without long rest breaks) to walk from end to end. The hike up Ngong Hills starts right from Ngong town at the northern foot of the hills 1961m above sea level, and traverses the whole range to the southern end at “Kona Baridi” meaning cold corner. It opens from 8am and closes by 5pm, also if you wish to visit before the opening  hours and as early as possible you can even book your tickets a day before. We went for Ngong Hills Day Trip recently and can suggest this as one of the best hiking trails around Nairobi.

Kakamega Forest

Time has stood still for the Kakamega Forest, a remnant of the rain forest that stretched all across Central Africa. This beautiful forest is home to various mammals including bush pigs, giant forest hedgehogs, colobus monkeys, Debrazzar monkeys and pottos. Some of the birds to be seen here include the Blue Headed Bee Eater, Black Billed Turaco, Turner’s Eremomela and Grey Parrots. Bird watching, hiking and rock climbing can be enjoyed here in the serenity of the forest that time forgot.

Sitting near the border of Uganda is Kenya’s only tropical forest, Kakamega.

Filled with abundant rivers that feed into Lake Victoria, the rainforest is said to be the last of what remains from the pre-historic Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once flourished across Africa.

The rainforest contains diverse species that cannot be found elsewhere in Kenya, such as blue monkeys and marsh mongooses.

Aberdare National Park

Image

Aberdare National Park is one of Kenya’s prime protected areas; at 765.7 Square Kilometres. This Park runs the expanse of a majestic mountain range on the eastern edge of the Rift Valley. Its topography ranges from high peaks, hills, and moorlands to indigenous streams, ravines, waterfalls, and forest that you can enjoy. Due to its favorable altitude, the reserve is quite misty and rainy, with roads that become almost impassable during the rainy season. Aberdares Kenya is home to the 2nd largest herd of rare Black Rhinos. You can also view many animals here including Lions, Black Leopards, Elephants, as well as the elusive Bongo Antelope.
If you ever visited the old Table Mountain trail before it was closed, you are familiar with the maddening steepness it flexed. And if that shocked you, the new Aberdares Table Mountain Hike trail may only be the stuff of the nightmares.

Mount Kenya Trails

Far from being just one peak, Mount Kenya is a mass, consisting of a multitude of spires, cliffs, ridges and peaks. Mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa and stands somewhat unjustly in the shadow of it's taller neighbour Kilimanjaro, which lies some 320km away in the south and is visible on a clear day.

There are three trekking routes: approaching from the west is the Naro Moru route; from the east is Chogoria and from the north is the Sirimon route.

Naro Moru is the fastest route, and therefore the most popular one, it can be completed over three days.

Chogoria is said to be the most scenic and interesting, as it passes tarns and looks down sheer cliffs, into magnificent gorges.

The Sirimon Route is the least used, but passes through impressive yellowwood forests and has abundant wildlife and scenery higher up. This route is also the best for acclimatisation.

Mt. Ololokwe

Mt. Ololokwe is a distinctive flat-topped mountain overlooking the Samburu plains in Kenya’s northern frontier. If you have driven along the Great North road past Isiolo, then this flat-topped stunning mountain needs no introduction. Mount Ololokwe is located on Namunyak Conservancy in Samburu East. The mountain rises out of the Samburu plains and is around 2000 ASL at its highest point. It’s actually a short distance from Archer’s Post (a local settlement occupied by the Samburu people and also used as a training ground by the British Army). Climbing the sacred mountain, Mt Ololokwe was a highlight of our northern Kenya Road trip.
Located in northern Kenya in the Samburu region, Ololokwe has been climbed via multiple technical routes, mostly on the ledge-filled and lower-angle terrain on the west side of the mountain.
